Community Learning at
Temple Israel South Shore: An intergenerational, outside-the-box alternative to “Hebrew School” Our overall goals: Exposing children, teens and adults to the richness of Jewish learning Exciting them about the process of learning and developing their Jewish identity Engaging them in an on-going exploration of Jewish life, history, and culture We strive to achieve these goals through a Sunday morning program that is theme-based, with themes lasting for several weeks and sometimes months (e.g., “the immigrant experience”). Activities in support of the theme include text study, discussions of videos and films, singing, drama, and artwork. (We hope to add internet exploration in the coming year.) How do children learn to love Judaism when parents do not feel like they know enough to spark that love? How do children learn to feel good about their identity as Jews when parents feel conflicted? Our children develop positive identities as Jews to the extent that they witness their parents and other adults and teens exploring and enjoying Judaism themselves. This is the principle underlying our Community Learning program. It’s long past time to break that chain of “I suffered through Hebrew School so now it’s your turn to suffer through Hebrew School”! Education researchers have been saying this for several decades now, but the word has clearly not reached suburbia. The prevailing belief system holds that the whole enterprise is about sending children to school. But developing a Jewish identity is not about going to school! It’s about exploring and enjoying Judaism alongside other people – of all ages – who are also exploring and enjoying Judaism. In addition to Community Learning, we also offer prayerbook Hebrew instruction for the second half of the morning, using the innovative Mitkadem program from URJ that emphasizes self-paced learning. Adults are welcome and encouraged to participate either as learners or as “study buddies” for our children. Whatever your level of knowledge of Hebrew reading, there is a place for you! We invite you to make a commitment to your own exploration and enjoyment of Judaism as well as to our community’s children, and plan to join us on Sunday mornings. Learning – At Temple Israel South Shore, it’s not just a kid thing. For
